Youth Group News, May, 2010

April was a busy month for our youth!  On Saturday the 3rd, youth and leaders gathered in the morning for our monthly service project at the Food Bank, where we sorted plastic bags into easier to use stacks.  After a pizza lunch, we started stuffing Easter Eggs with candy.  All in all, about 800 eggs were prepared for the hunt the next day.  After that, a few of our youth stayed later for a rehearsal of our Easter Sunrise drama.

The following morning, youth arrived at 5:30 am(!) to help with the Sunrise Service.  Kit Boyett, Lane Bynum, and Katie and Tia Bishop gave excellent performances in the Sunrise drama, In The Dark of Morning.  After Easter Breakfast, our youth sprang into action during the 9:00 am service, carefully planting the eggs in the meadow and playground.  According to reports, all who participated in the hunt thought it was “Egg-cellent!”

The following Sunday, May 11th, our youth gathered for a Chili Cook Off.  Many of our New Song friends and families stayed after worship to sample the many varieties of chili, from mild to hot, several varieties of cornbread, and other goodies.  Thanks again to all who brought Chili or other items, and special thanks to Elizabeth Galiani and Caitlin Whitaker for cleanup help above and beyond the call of duty.

Our Annual Youth Group Car Wash was next, on Saturday April 17th,  from 10 am to 2 pm.  Our car cleansing technicians put the suds on Subarus, polished the Pontiacs and shined the Chevys!  Special Thanks to Alan and Pastor Galene Boyett, Ron Croft, Ben McCaughey, and Pat Howard for their help.  Both Cook Off and Car Wash generated financial resources for all our Youth activities.  Thanks for your patronage!

On Sunday, April 25th, our youth gathered for a first-ever celebration for our graduating seniors!  Katie Bishop, Sharlee McCaughey, and Eric Wakeman were recognized for their achievements, and were honored with cards, gifts, best wishes, and prayers for their future.  Tracie Lervold and Amanda Nieves were not able to attend, but will receive their gifts as well.  Approximately 75 New Song members gathered for what we plan to become an annual New Song tradition.

Several of our youth have been elected to offices in our District and Conference.  On March 27th, Rachel Skidmore was elected as Vice President of our District Youth Council, and as a District Youth Delegate to Annual Conference.  On April 17th, Mitchell Papendorf was elected as the Senior High Representative to the Conference Youth Council, and Kit Boyett was elected as a Member-At Large to the Conference Council, and as Youth Representative to the conference Christian Education Board.  Congratulations to all!

There’s lots coming up in May and June!  We’ll be joining other youth groups for a District Dance on Sunday, May 2nd at First United Methodist in Glendale, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.  Katie Bishop will graduate from Verrado on May 13th, Tracie Lervold and Amanda Nieves will graduate from Valley Vista on May 18th, and Sharlee McCaughey and Eric Wakeman will graduate from Willow Canyon, also on May 18th.  In June, our Summer District Volleyball League will start its weekly schedule of games every Thursday evening, and our New Song squad will practice and play games on our new Court!  We also note many opportunities for our youth to enjoy the cool of Mingus Mountain at Mingus Mountain Summer Camps in June and July.  Please call CW Dotto, at 602-330-8176, for more information.

I regret that this is the last time I will write this column, as I will begin a new appointment as Pastor of Heritage United Methodist in Las Vegas on July 1st.  However, thanks to our United Methodist connection, I look forward to seeing our youth and young adults at conference events in the years ahead.  Our youth are wonderful, thoughtful, intelligent, compassionate young men and women.  They are not only the church of  tomorrow, they are a vital and integral part of our congregation today.  Please join Youth Directors C. W. Dotto, Shaundi Carmack, and me, in supporting them and their life in our New Song family.
