When “Pull Yourself Together” Doesn't Work
You’ve heard it a million times: “Pull yourself together. . .Cheer up. . .Tough it out. . .It’s not that bad.” Perhaps someone has said it to you. Or maybe you keep saying it to yourself. But it hasn’t helped. Things just aren’t coming together. You’re still hurting. And you may not know what to do next.
We’re often taught to be strong, self-sufficient, and independent. We can come to believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, tucking them away and carrying them alone. But that isn’t God’s plan for us. Galatians 6:2 reminds us, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” God calls us to care for one other — and allow others to care for us when we are hurting or struggling.
If you’re feeling sad, overwhelmed, or struggling inside, you don’t have to suffer alone.
It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to reach out.
Here’s the good news: You don’t have to go through your struggles alone. Help is available.
Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who offer confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will listen, walk alongside you, and provide a caring, nonjudgmental presence as you work through what you’re experiencing and discover what is truly in your heart.
If you’d like to learn more about Stephen Ministry or what it might mean for you, please talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Ken Riddlesworth, Chaplain Kathy Norris, Pastor Kathleen Puntar, or Pastor Misty Howick.
